Good Morning Jamokes, it’s Friday August 7, 2020!
As it is every August 7th, today is Purple Heart Day!
Back in 1782, George Washington created the Badge of Merit. The Badge of Merit was presented to soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action.” The badge itself symbolized the courage and devotion of an American Patriot. Thanks to General Douglas MacArthur, the U.S. War Department created the Order of the Purple Heart. The modern day medal bears a bust of George Washington and his coat of arms.
The Purple Heart is the oldest U.S. military honor still in existence. Up until 1944, the Purple Heart recognized service members’ actions, but since then the requirements limited the award to only those wounded or killed in combat.
Hey kids, salute these true American heroes, and I’ll see you Monday, when it’s time to celebrate…
