As it is every July 20th, today is National Moon Day!
National Moon Day is celebrated on this day, as it was July 20, 1969 when man first walked on the moon. Apollo 11 was the vessel that brought Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins into space, and onto the giant wheel of cheese in the sky. While there, Aldrin and Armstrong collected just under 50 lbs of lunar material to be studied. Adding to this amazing scientific and technological accomplishment, it was broadcast on television, where millions of Americans watched Armstrong take the first steps on the moon, and utter the famous line “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
