Good Morning Jamokes, it’s Monday April 15, 2019!
As it is every April 15th, today is National Glazed Spiral Ham Day!
For you poor suckers who don’t know what it is, a glazed spiral ham is traditionally found at large, holiday dinners. This gourmet food item was the brainchild of Detroit’s Harry Hoenselaar, in 1952. At that time, he patented both his spiral slicer, as well as the glaze recipe for the ham. The slicer was truly innovative, as it allowed for a full bone-in ham to be cut in a single continuous, even spiral. As for the traditional glaze, it consists of sugar, honey, or even orange juice, then adding spices to taste. With these patents, Hoenselaar created The HoneyBaked Ham Company in 1957.
OOOOOOHHHH BABY!!! The last couple national days have been good ones for the big guy…first, grilled cheese on Friday, and glazed spiral ham today! While I’ve had to cut back on this sugary delight (bikini season is coming up), it is sneaky my favorite cold cut to snack on. When I’m sitting on the couch and need a quick bite, spiral ham is a go-to when it’s in the house. This is especially solid, timing-wise, as ham of all types are staple of Easter. I can promise that there will a couple varieties of ham no the dinner table at my grandmother’s house this Sunday.
Hey kids, get yourself a honey-glazed ham for the fam tonight, and I’ll see you tomorrow, when it’s time to celebrate…
