Time To Celebrate…National Eat A Hoagie Day

Good Morning Jamokes, it’s Monday September 14, 2020!

As it is every September 14th, today is National Eat A Hoagie Day!

If you’re unaware, a hoagie is basically a large sandwich, just with a different name. The hoagie origin has a couple different stories, but they specifically emanate from Philadelphia. Both DiCostanzas and DePalmas claim to be the originator of the hoagie, dating back to the 1920’s. Even earlier than that, a story from the World War I era claims that Philly shipyard workers came up with them. Due to the long days, they needed a big sandwich to get them through it. As the story goes, they called these sandwiches “hoggies,” because you’d need to be a hog to finish one. Due to the nature of the horrible Philly accent, these became hoagies whenever someone with working ears heard it.

Depending on where you’re from, a sandwich goes by many different names. Whether it’s a sub, a grinder, a hero, or something completely different, if you have a big piece of bread, with meats, cheese, veggies, and dressing, you’ve got yourself a hoagie. Of course, there are millions of options when it comes to these, but some of the most well known favorites are Italian, American, meatball, and chicken parm sammies.

Hey kids, snag your favorite hoagie, and I’ll see you tomorrow, when it’s time to celebrate…
