It’s December 31st, and we’re all doing something. Hell, even if you’re doing nothing, that’s basically something.
For some reason, it’s been decided that the New Year must be celebrated with some large party/event. Maybe, if you’re having a great time at 12:01 AM on January 1, you’re gonna have a good year? I’m not totally sure, but I suppose I don’t make the rules either.
Between being a bouncer for several years, and now being in my early-mid 30’s, I pretty much won’t go out for NYE unless it’s a house party, or a private party. Since those are my rules, the girlfriend and I will be having a super quiet, low-key night at home. We have plenty of wine and vodka, plus I’ll make a nice dinner for us to enjoy.
It’s super quiet, kinda boring, and, I thought, about as lame as possible. Then I came into work today, and heard from one of my coworkers (let’s just call her MB), what she will be doing. MB will be spending her NYE hanging out at home, playing video games with her boyfriend. Not too bad right? I mean, it even sounds kinda similar to mine, with respect to keeping it low key, spending it with your significant other.
I live in upstate NY, and, of course, MB also lives in upstate NY. MB’s boyfriend lives in Austin, TX. MB has a long distance relationship…not much I can say about that, considering my girlfriend lives on Long Island. Here’s where things get interesting—MB will still be at home in NY, while her BF will be at home in TX. They will be playing video games, together, remotely. Yes, MB, who is a gamer in her spare time, will be streaming her super romantic video game NYE date with her boyfriend.
Surely, this is as weird as it gets, right? Yeah, why not, that’s as weird as it gets between MB and her BF of 6 weeks, whom she only met in person 2 weeks ago. Can’t wait to find out how they handle midnight itself, considering MB is in the Eastern Time Zone, and her boyfriend is in the Central.
So, just remember, when you’re stumbling around the bar tonight, clumsily trying to talk to someone long enough to at the very least get a New Years midnight kiss out of them, it could be worse. You could be having a video game date with your significant other, who you’ve “been in a relationship with” longer than you’ve actually physically met the person, and you live in different time zones.
